California peach farmers are expected to take a multimillion-dollar financial hit and lose vast quantities of crops after Del Monte Foods plans to permanently close two state plants. Hundreds of employees will lose their jobs, including 571 general laborers at the Modesto plant alone.

One of the largest wine suppliers in the U.S. is shuttering a vineyard and laying off 93 employees across various locations as it better positions its business amid falling alcohol consumption. E & J Gallo Winery, which owns brands including Barefoot and Apothic, is closing its Ranch Winery in Saint Helena, California, in April, according to a WARN notice filed with the state. The closure of the production facility impacts 56 workers. In addition, the company is laying off approximately two dozen workers at a handful of other locations across California, including 15 workers at another winery in Saint Helena and two more at its nearby tasting room. Gallo is also cutting 11 workers at its Healdsburg winery and nine at its Frei Ranch facility. These layoffs are effective in April.

The Broward School District is planning to cut about 1,000 jobs and has given employees its first clue as to which positions may be affected. The “primary impact” of the district’s cost-cutting effort will be district-level positions. Employees will be notified if they are being laid off during late spring, states the Feb. 20 email. Their last day would be June 30.

The company is one of several big-name employers that are losing workers. Verizon's executive leadership and corporate functions have remained in Basking Ridge, while its official headquarters are in New York City.

CoStar Group has carried out another round of layoffs at its downtown Richmond headquarters, affecting employees who work on the Homes.com platform.
